Slingbox released in

Filed under: Home Entertainment, Portable Audio, Portable Video Because you can never have convenient enough access to all that great BBC programming, Sling Media has just released a version of their popular Slingbox for British TV junkies. The UK model has been tweaked a bit for European viewing, with PAL tuners replacing the NTSC versions found in US boxes, and a DVB-T tuner thrown in for placeshifting that sweet, sweet OTA Freeview content. In conjunction with the UK rollout, the folks at Sling also announced an updated version of the SlingPlayer PC software, whose main upgrades include widescreen 16:9 support and a skinnable client. Slingbox: UK will initially be available exclusively at PC World's website and retail locations -- and at Currys stores in four to six weeks -- for 180, VAT included. NYPD marking iPods, phones to aid in theft

Filed under: Cellphones, Portable Audio, Portable Video Myth or not, the story that muggers are specifically targeting folks with iPods has gotten a fair amount of press since it was first reported, and has convinced at least one police department to make a rather half-hearted attempt at returning peace of mind to the city's subway commuters. For the past three months, New York City cops have been offering iPod and other portable device owners a way to "register" their gear -- wherein the officers mark your hardware with invisible ink and copy down the serial number -- in order to provide victims with a slim but tangible chance of recovery. The two-pronged approach ensures that even if thieves figure out a way to wash off the ink. which is only visible under infrared lighting, they may not be wise enough to file off the serial numbers as well. So far, over 2,000 gadgets have been marked at Transit Bureau offices and tables located around the subway system, although the program has yet to help any victims recover their stolen goods, so it's probably not a bad idea to continue sporting your Thomas Pink tie. Filed under: Home Entertainment, Portable Audio If the Hi-Fi was a little late-century minimalist for you, peep Speck's new SpeckTone, the only iPod dock with real-simulated 1950s design stylings to get your be-bop on, dig? It's not only old school on the outside; the $150 SpeckTone has analogue innards for a "richer" sound (somehow we have a feeling there ain't no tubes in there), a 4-inch sub and 28 watt speakers, as well as a green backlit volume knob to offset the glossy lacquered wood cabinet. It really was a different time, wasn't it? Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Napster going to

Filed under: Portable Audio We first heard about Napster Japan itself when it was announced last fall in a partnership with Tower Records, but it looks like we now have a few more details on the service and a rough launch date. It's now set to launch sometime this fall and it'll be a flat rate service, although exactly what that rate will be has yet to be decided. The service itself will apparently be the same as in the U.S., with both basic Napster as well as Napster To Go for transferring music to portable devices. And it looks like they're already lining up support, with NTT DoCoMo just announcing a few days ago that they'll be offering Napster support on their new phones being released this summer. You will, however, still have to download music to your PC first, then transfer it to your phone. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
