Apple straining NAND

Filed under: iPod Family, iPhone Electronista passes along a report saying that Apple's increased NAND chip demand is straining suppliers to the breaking point. Electronista says Apple is trying to acquire a supply large enough to cover the manufacturing of all iPods and iPhones for the second half of 2007, including about 15% more chips than Samsung had agreed to produce. No matter how you look at it, a 400 - 500 million four gigabit (aka 512 MB) chip order is a whole lot. Not enough NANDs may mean longer waits for customers who want to pick up iPhones. IPod: iPods Banned by Schools in an Attempt to Stop Exam

bueller.jpg Teachers, eh? First they came to praise the iPod, then they came to bury it. A spate of incidents involving iPods in class and exam rooms has led to a ban on digital media players in some schools. A high school in Idaho has been one of the first establishments to ban MP3 players after teachers overheard some of the kids talking about downloading formulae and other crib material onto the players. "It doesn't take long to get out of the loop with teenagers," said Aaron Maybon, principal of Mountain View High School. "They come up with new and creative ways to cheat pretty fast." Unlike the students of Duke University of North Carolina, it seems. Three years ago it handed out iPods to its undergrads in an attempt to enhance the learning process. And have they seen an increase in cheating? No, according to Tim Dodd, exec director of The Center for Academic Integrity at Duke, who claims it is beneath his students to stoop to that level, and that such incidents have dropped over the past decade. So what's the moral of the story? You can trust an undergrad, but not a high schooler, it seems. '€" Ad Dugdale Some schools ban iPods to stop cheating [Fox News]

Aspyr releases iQuiz

Filed under: Gaming, iPod Family, Software Well that didn't take long. We just mentioned the release of Apple's newest iPod game, iQuiz, and now Aspyr has already come out with iQuiz Maker. This little application makes it easy to create custom quizzes and load them on your iPod. Of course you can also share your iQuizzes with others as well. The iQuiz site already contains several sample iQuizzes as well as three different themes. This could conceivably turn your iPod into a study tool (or at least that's what you can tell mom). iQuiz Maker is a free download from Aspyr Media. Golden

Filed under: iPod Family, Holidays Sure, you can pick up a cute iPod speaker or sweet Baby iPod shirt for Mother's Day, but wouldn't a luxurious 24-karat golden iPod send the "I love you so much Mom that money means nothing" message you really want to deliver? Money won't buy happiness but it can buy you a gold plated iPod. Just 299 for a 30G version or 399 for 80GB. Unfortunately, the front face plates do not seem to be treated as the order page lists black and white fronts along with the gold plated backs. Which is a pity, because Mamma really wants a gold-plated scroll wheel. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Who's Crying Now: Griffin Amplifi, Journi iPod Docks

Despite announcing these pretty neat looking iPod docks back in January, Griffin's only getting around to shipping them now. If you recall, the Amplifi is a standard-looking iPod dock with a PowerMate stuck on the front for volume control. Like a wheel in the sky, perhaps. The Journi, on the other hand, is a world's apart, since it's a battery powered dock that lasts 8-10 hours on a single charge and gives you music when you take the midnight train going anywhere. Both are available now and go for $149 (Amplifi) and $129 (Journi). Please do not discontinue your beliefs. '€" Jason Chen Mobile Tech Review
