Microsoft Office for Mac 2008: Verdict? It's

I bought Microsoft's newest version of Office for Mac (2008) on Tuesday and have been using it nonstop ever since. (Check out the CNET review here.) It is snappy, intuitive, and even innovative in some ways. (MyDay, seen at right, is a blessing.) In short, Microsoft has done something very, very right with this product. I recommend it to everyone who needs it. Entourage is the biggest area where I see improvements. It is soooo fast compared with Office 2004 for Mac. The UI is gorgeous. My favorite improvement, however, is My Day. It's a floating window that shows my upcoming appointments, "To Do" items, and e-mails that I've flagged for action. It's such a simple addition, but I'm already wholly reliant on it. The product does have some downsides. ...

First Looks: Contour Design rE charge Universal Charger for iPod & iPhone

Though similar in concept to dual-purpose chargers we've seen in the past, Contour Design's new rE charge Universal Charger (TBD) will be certified as both Made for iPod and Works with iPhone compatible, and is therefore capable of charging either device -- or, thanks to twin USB ports, both at once. Contour will include a Dock Connector cable and a USB to mini USB cable in the package....

Unborn Babies on Our iPod Creep Us the Hells Out [Babies R Weird]

This is just weird, even for the giddy parents-to-be types who like to run around showing off copies of their ultrasound at work. A hospital in England is one (two?)-upping old-school 2D ultrasounds with 4D scans of your in utero spawn. The scanner (which is apparently not so new itself, per the comments) produces a moving 3D image, which is why we guess they're calling it 4D'€"not 'cause it's like tesseract, which I would much rather look at. What is new (and unsettling) is that the hospital's uploading the images to a secure site for bug-eyed mommies-to-be to download to their MP3 player or cellphone. The article is kind of trend-fishing with the iPod headline, since the hospital also gives you the file on a CD or DVD, which you can load up on anything'€"like grossest of grossness, a 50-inch TV. Sweet christ, I hope this doesn't become a real trend. [Evening Standard via Spluch]

CES explodes with ever more iPod-compatible

Filed under: Humor, iPod Family, Other Events This is yet another bonanza year of the iPod-docking-station compatible device if early reports from CES are to be believed. New docking solutions include jack-equipped cars, digital photo frames, iPod-compatible pacemakers, genetically modified cattle with horn-implanted docks, wearable dockware, iPod-compatible beer, and so forth. Or something like that. I got a little bored reading through today's press releases and may have embellished a bit. Actually, the iPod-compatible news from CES this year is a bit on the slim side. After last year's Macworld-CES head-to-head grudge match, CES seems to have realized this year that it doesn't produce all that much in the way of interesting Apple-related news.
11 year olds, iPhone repositories and the power of

Filed under: iPod Family, Security, iPhone So while I was gone off, enjoying the wild wonders of Arizona, seems like a big kerfuffle tumulted, disturbed, and then resolved. Mike Rose just dropped me an IM, asking whether the whole "Mikey" thing meant that the iPhone was especially susceptible to malicious influences. Was this the canary in the coal mine? Are bad things coming down the road iPhone-wise? In my opinion? Not so much. This bad patch showed more that users could be quick to respond and capable of handling flackitude than that the iPhone was a particularly vulnerable platform. Less harm was done by Mikey the 11 year old than by the whole recent QuickBooks debacle. It's a given when one computes that bad things happen. Some harm is intentional, some not. What we saw at play here, and is especially obvious in retrospect, was a quick community response. The strong network of Apple/iPhone enthusiasts got the message out and acted with precision and decisiveness. Well done, guys. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

iLuv i720 and i730 Bluetooth/FM Kits Let You Reject Calls and Listen to Your iPod Hands Free

The Skinny: The i720 is a line-in iPod/iPhone and hands-free Bluetooth remote, with FM transmission and a caller ID display, plus call reject, transfer and other basic phone commands. It's small, black and fairly attractive and seems pretty useful for ardent multi-taskers. The Catch: It's something else taking up valuable pocket space. The Skinny: Another FM transmitter/hands-free Bluetooth mutant, this kit is for your car, and plugs directly into the iPod's dock port to charge it as well. Call reject, transfer and the usual hands-free Bluetooth commands. It's definitely more useful than standard iPod car kits. The Catch: Kind of ugly. And I'm tired of lower case i's.
